Pursuing Life in Christ with Passion and Purpose

About Us

At Ancient City, we are pursuing life in Christ with passion and purpose!

Our church was organized on January 20, 1887, with 18 charter members. The group originally met in the Armory of the old Genovar Opera House, which was located where the St. George Pharmacy stands. The Reverend H. M. King was the first pastor. In 1894, Henry Flagler generously agreed to give a prime lot worth about $5,000 with the stipulation that the church body had only two years to erect a building at a cost of not less than $10,000 and that it had to be debt free. Mr. Flagler also requested that the church never put a mortgage on the church property and never hang a bell in the tower. The church building was completed in April 1895 and dedicated on February 2, 1896. It is believed that ours is the oldest surviving church meeting structure on the east coast of Florida. In the early 1950s, the sanctuary was remodeled and then again in the early 2000’s.

But a church is not to be confused with her facilities; the church of Jesus Christ is composed of the people who gather as a community of "faith, hope, and love." While we are grateful for our heritage and our history, including our facilities, we are more excited about the thousands of people who have been part of our story in the past one hundred plus years and who have paved the way for us. Those who make up Ancient City Baptist Church today welcome you, and we would be glad for God to place you among us as we write the next chapter of our church's history.
